Tobermory High School visits Horton Quarry

Stormy weather almost cancelled a visit to North Yorkshire’s Horton quarry for 14 teenagers from Tobermory High School on the Isle of Mull.

“Luckily, it cleared enough for us to get up to the viewing point,” said geography teacher Ryan Lowe, who led the field trip for the 14 and 15-year-olds.

“It was great to see them discussing land use conflicts and how the quarry works with the community. “It really helped bring their learning to life – worth coming down 300 miles from Scotland for.”

Principal geologist John Peate hosted the two-hour visit, which included a question-and-answer session in the site office.  “They really enjoyed it and asked lots of interesting questions,” said John. 

The quarry near Settle has been worked for more than 120 years, employs 10 people and produces 600,000 tonnes of limestone a year.
