About Horton Quarry
Horton is a large quarry situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park covering almost 80ha, and is surrounded by SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SAC (Special Areas of Conservation) areas which include Limestone pavement areas.
The quarry extracts Carboniferous Limestone to produce a variety of aggregates for use in our own ready mixed concrete plants in the north west of England and in external customers’ concrete products. The limestone is over 90m thick and comprises both black and white limestone which are worked separately to produce products with a consistent colour. The white limestone produces very clean white aggregates which are much prized for their colour. The white limestone is also used for lime making and has been used in chemical processes in the past. The quarry has over 40 million tonnes of consented reserves which should be sufficient to last for at least 70 years. Once extraction is complete, the site will be restored to calcareous grassland.
High PSV gritstone underlies the limestone and Hanson hope to work this material in the near future to produce high quality aggregates for use in asphalt and road surfacing.
We currently employ 9 people all from the local area.
The quarry is currently running at nearly 19 years without a Lost Time Injury for which they have received a Hanson Platinum award for health and safety.
The site has numerous visitors each year, mainly from local schools who are studying geology, geography and or aspects of the environmental impact of quarrying in the National Park. If you are interested in upcoming visits, or would like to arrange one, please use the form below.
An outcrop of rare exposed Ingletonian strata has been preserved close to the entrance of the site so that it can be included on a local geological trail.
Horton quarry has sponsored the national three peaks fell race which starts in Horton for many years and recently this race was part of the world championships. We also contribute to many local events including local shows, galas and local community events. We also give a lot of free materials to local good causes and community projects.
Horton Quarry has been continuously worked by several different companies since the 1880’s, although it has only been operated by Hanson since 2000.
We advertise our opportunities on the Hanson website, leading online job boards and the print media. We also attend a selection of career events at both national and local levels. Occasionally, recruitment agencies will represent us in attracting specialist skills. We have a preferred suppliers list of recruitment agencies and will accept applications from those so approved.
