'Concrete in a Classroom' at Drumchapel concrete plant

Drumchapel Concrete plant employees inspired pupils during a visit for a project under the Scottish Secondary Schools’ Curriculum for Excellence.

Called ‘Concrete in the Classroom’, the initiative wanted on-site demonstrations of the production process and Heidelberg Materials Scotland happily obliged.

Seventy youngsters from Drumchapel Academy enjoyed the visit hosted by plant supervisors Paul Hutchison and Davie Moreland.

In a separate trip 10 pupils from Edinburgh Royal High were shown round the city plant by supervisors Willie Cairns and Neil Barclay.

Technicians, including Paul Fowler from Drumchapel, helped with demonstrations of the process, from the raw materials to final product, following tours of the plant.

The visits involved batchers, technicians, plant staff and drivers.

The youngsters were particularly interested that these plants between them had supplied concrete for the Scottish Parliament Building, The Hydro, Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Edinburgh Trams.
