Wetland project is tour highlight

Needingworth quarry’s wetland restoration partnership with the RSPB was centre stage during a high-level visit to the Cambridgeshire site.

A senior policy adviser from the Treasury and three officials from HM Revenue and Customs were invited to tour the quarry and its restored areas by the charity.

Unit manager Hilton Law said the RSPB is on the government working group that is reviewing the aggregates levy, the environmental tax on virgin stone extraction.

“They wanted to demonstrate the strong and productive relationship there is between us,” said Hilton, who gave a presentation on the site and the Heidelberg Materials-RSPB wetland project, a 30-year initiative.

“We had feedback from the visitors afterwards saying their time here had given them plenty of food for thought.”
