Local pupil switches on Christmas star

The Christmas star is once again shining brightly above Batts Combe quarry after Cheddar First School pupil George won our festive colouring competition to switch on the lights.

We invited children from Cheddar and Draycott & Rodney Stoke First Schools to take part in the competition and received more than 300 entries, which were judged by Batts Combe unit manager Simon Parkes, land and planning manager Alex Hemming, area clerk Emma Robbins and LEAD apprentice Ross Exon.

A dozen class winners received a set of colouring pencils, a selection box and certificate. George’s picture was chosen as the overall winner, giving him the honour of switching on the Christmas star.

Simon Parkes said: “The standard of the pictures in this year’s competition was extremely high and we had a very hard time choosing the overall winner.

“The star has become very popular within the local community, and we are pleased that it continues to bring a smile to so many people’s faces.”
