Highlighting careers in quarrying

A small team from our Batts Combe quarry took part in the careers fair at Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar to highlight the opportunities that exist for young people within the heavy building materials industry.

Unit manager Simon Parkes (pictured right), production supervisor Kyle Boyd and general operative Caroline Gould talked to pupils aged 13-18 about the company and our Learning Education and Development Programme (LEAD) Mineral Products Technician Higher apprenticeship scheme.

“It can be difficult for young people to know what to do when they finish in education and we were delighted so many were interested in learning more about our LEAD programme, which allows you to earn while you learn,” said Simon.

“The careers fair was extremely well attended and this, along with school’s Employability Hub, which we helped to fund, will help raise the aspirations of many of the students in our local community.”

Our LEAD programme allows school leavers to develop supervisory skills in a hands-on environment while studying towards a university qualification.
