Lauren's a woman on a mission

Craig yr Hesg asphalt plant operator Lauren Kinch is keen to encourage more women into the traditionally male-dominated industry.

The 26-year-old has only worked at the plant near Pontypridd since January, but is already running the heavy machinery and has built up respect from male colleagues.

She was encouraged to apply for the job by her brother Dan who is now area production supervisor, but was supervisor at the time.

“Some were apprehensive about a woman starting here,” said Lauren. “However, after the first few weeks of seeing me out shovelling in the rain and getting covered in dirt and soaking wet cleaning the plant, they realised I was here to work.

“They are a brilliant bunch of boys, but it takes a certain kind of woman to work here – if you are worried about how your hair and nails look this is not the job for you.

“If you are happy to get stuck in and want physical work and also to learn then it is the best job.”

“Despite no previous experience within the industry, Lauren has quickly become one of our most valuable team members,” said district operations manager Martin Vaughan.

“Her outlook and positive can-do attitude has enabled her to progress fast. I see a very bright future for her within Heidelberg Materials.”
