Heidelberg Materials staff help with Gwernymynydd and Cadole spring clean

A village is looking spic and span after residents turned out to give the streets an annual Spring Clean.

Children, mums, dads and grandparents took to the streets and lanes around Gwernymnyydd armed with litter pickers and bin bags and picked up scores of crisp packets, plastic bottles and fast food wrappings.

And this year Heidelberg Materials Cement workers employed at Cefn Mawr Quarry joined the small army of village residents engaged in the annual Community Council clean-up.

Gwernymynydd community councillor Kevin Hughes says it’s the fourth April litter-pick councillors have organised.

He said: “It’s amazing the amount of rubbish collected from the hedgerows and grass verges throughout the village.

“The biggest issue is always plastic and glass bottles as well as crisp packets and fast food wrappings that some people seem to think it’s OK to throw from car windows.

“The community council is delighted that Heidelberg Materials UK workers from Cefn Mawr Quarry at Cadole joined this year’s event and really got stuck in clearing rubbish along Hafod Lane and around Cadole. We really do appreciate the effort the lads put in.”

He added: “Every child who took part received an Easter Egg courtesy of the community council. And there were four especially large eggs for those children lucky enough to have found special and hidden egg posters around the village as they went about the spring clean.”

Jason Parry, Heidelberg Materials Cement’s Cefn Mawr Quarry manager says he was only too happy to help this year’s Gwernymynydd and Cadole spring clean.

He said: “We want to help the community as much as we can and our men were really happy joining in helping clear rubbish from areas that would have been too challenging for children to tackle.

“The annual village spring clean is a great idea and something we want to help support. The amount of waste and rubbish collected was amazing and just shows what can be achieved when a community comes together.”
