Black dye added to Flintshire quarry to deter swimmers

Black dye has been added into a Flintshire quarry pool to deter children from risking their lives by swimming there. Heidelberg Materials UK hope the substance will put people off taking a dip and are backing North Wales Police's campaign to highlight the 'hidden dangers'. The dye, which will stain the skin temporarily but can removed through showering, makes the water look “unwelcoming”.

The police force and Heidelberg Materials UK are urging children and young people to stay away from water-filled quarries during the school holidays. Heidelberg Materials communications manager David Weeks said, “We work very hard to ensure our sites are secure and carry out regular patrols of the boundaries to check and repair fencing. The fences and warning signs are there for a reason – please respect them.”
